KAIPĀTIKI PROJECT

DATE: JUNE 10, 2025

LOCATION: ECOHUB
17 Lauderdale Road, Birkdale

Join us for a one-of-a-kind networking event – the Kaipātiki Project, an innovative EcoHub growing a sustainable future for people and nature. They do this by empowering people, inspiring connection with nature and enabling sustainable living. Along with 1,000 volunteers annually, they run a thriving native plant nursery where they grow 40,000+ native plants every year and plant them back in the local reserves. They facilitate forest, stream and estuary regeneration activity, promote zero waste and encourage local food initiatives. By working together, we can restore our native plants, birds, bugs and fish.

What will the work entail? Below is a list of activities that the day may include. A level of mobility and fitness is required to complete most tasks. We will cover Health & Safety issues on the day relating to specific tasks, but if you have any concerns ahead of time, please let us know.

  • Working in the native plant nursery
  • Weeding and preparing the site for future planting activity
  • Clearing rubbish from forests and streams
  • Planting native trees
  • Cutting harakeke
  • Weaving
  • Receiving educational nuggets and having fun!

What to bring:

  • Weather appropriate clothing: please be Auckland weather-ready aka 4 seasons in a day. We work through light showers, so we recommend rain jackets when skies are grey.
  • We recommend wearing long sleeves and long pants to protect your skin, as we work in bush and long grass.
  • Clean and sturdy closed-toe shoes: due to Kauri Dieback protocols observed in reserves, we ask that people bring “kissable-clean” shoes or boots with dirt scrubbed off ahead of time. The shoes will get muddy.
  • A pair of gardening gloves: super recommended to keep your hands safe. We’ll have some with us for anyone who doesn’t have them.
  • Reusable drink bottle, filled and ready to go!
  • All tools are provided
