Travel Advisory: New EU Border Rules for Non-Schengen Attendees

Update on EU Border Control: The Entry/Exit System (EES)

If you are traveling to the ISBNPA 2026 Annual Meeting in Cádiz from outside the Schengen Area, please be aware of a recent change to European border procedures.

As of April 10, 2026, the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is officially operational across all Schengen external borders. This new system transitions border processing from manual passport stamping to an automated digital registry.

Here is what you need to know to prepare for your arrival in Spain:

What to Expect at Border Control
  • Digital Registration: Manual passport stamps will no longer be issued. Instead, your entry and exit dates will be recorded digitally in the EES database.
  • Biometric Data Collection: Upon your first entry into the Schengen Area under this system, border officials will collect a digital facial scan and a fingerprint scan.
  • Biometric Passports: To be processed through the new automated system, you must travel with an electronic, biometric passport (indicated by the small camera/chip symbol on the front cover).
  • Visa Requirements Remain Unchanged: The EES is a registration process, not a visa. If your nationality currently requires a short-stay Schengen visa to enter Spain, you must still apply for and carry it as usual.
Tips for a Smoother Arrival
  • Pre-Register with the Official App: The EU provides a free “Travel to Europe” mobile app. Using this to securely submit your passport details and facial image within 72 hours of your arrival can help shorten your processing time at the border.
  • Use Automated e-Gates: When navigating the airport, look for the automated EES self-service kiosks. Scanning your passport at these stations is generally faster than waiting in line for a staffed counter.
  • Allow Extra Connection Time: Because the system was recently implemented globally, border processing may take longer than usual while travelers and staff adjust to the new workflow. We recommend factoring in an extra buffer time when arranging connecting flights.

For the most up-to-date travel requirements, please consult your airline and your local Spanish consulate prior to departure.

We look forward to seeing you in Cádiz!
